What is Redefined’s history?

Redefined was formed in October of 2001 by Nate Mendl and Andrew Jarvinen. It was realized early on that the group had a dynamic and unique sound. Redefined made their public debut on February 16, 2002 during the regional round of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella held at Mills Hall in Madison.

On December 6, 2002, Redefined hosted its first large theater concert. It was a smash success, selling out the 1300 seat Wisconsin Union Theater and setting a new standard for a cappella music on the UW campus and the Madison area.

Redefined has continued to raise the standard for co-ed a cappella, performing across the Midwest, all over Madison and recently on an episode of Dateline NBC. They perform a large theater concert every semester, in addition to numerous other shows throughout the year. They have quickly become favorites of fans across the country and are notorious on the Internet for their Nintendo Medley.

Now an established and very successful group, Redefined has released four studio albums and will be recording their fifth in spring 2010.

How many musicians are in Redefined?

Redefined is currently an 19 member ensemble comprised of 5 basses, 4 tenors, 4 altos, 4 sopranos and 2 vocal percussionists.

How do I audition?

We have auditions for new members at the beginning of every semester. We’ll post flyers around campus and of course on the Web site to announce audition dates. At the first audition, you’ll sing a verse and a chorus of any song you like. We’ll also have you sing some scales and test your range.  After the first audition, we’ll hold callbacks.  At callbacks, we choose the wonderful people that make up Redefined!

How often do you perform?

Redefined performs a show almost every week, whether it’s an event hosted by another student organization on campus or a larger show somewhere in the Midwest. We sing at everything from banquets to charity events to headline shows. Anywhere you want to hear Redefined, we’ll be there.

Do you have Redefined stuff I can buy?

We sure do! We have T-shirts, pins and of course, CDs, all available at our shows. The CDs are available online by clicking on one of the CD icons on the side of this page. You can also contact our business manager, Joshua Kock-Fogarty, to get your hands on some hot items.

How do you decide what you sing?

All the members of Redefined have unique music tastes, and that comes through in our repertoire. A group member usually has a song in mind that he or she wants Redefined to perform, and then arranges it. The group votes on our favorite arrangements, and typically adds 3-6 songs to our set each semester.
